Work Plan Overview
The project consists of a total of 5 work packages
- Project Management
- Scaling Method and Numerical Tool Development
- Experimental Method Development
- Experimental Testing
- Dissemination and Exploitation
Work Package 1: Project Management
The overall goal of WP1 is to ensure that the project is managed successfully and that the project goals are achieved
in the defined timeframe and within the planned costs. The performed activities as well as the relevant risks are
monitored and compared with the project plan.
Work Package 2: Scaling Method and Numerical Tool Development
In this WP, numerical tools are developed and applied to predict the accretion behaviour on propellers. The focus will
be on the development and implementation of models for secondary effects on small chord, rotating aerofoils such as
droplet splash and bounce, liquid water shedding, secondary droplet breakup and re-impingement as well as erosion
due to high-speed droplet impact. Whilst already known on static aerofoil sections, the effects appear to be different on
rotating components (significantly, in some cases). These models will be developed and validated from literature as
well as using results from previous research projects (All-Weather Drone, JOICE and PrISM) and results from WP4.
Furthermore, scaling laws will be developed in cooperation with NASA. These scaling laws will be investigated by
means of numerical simulation to check their applicability over a wide range of conditions. Pre-test simulations will be
performed to assist in the test matrix development and will help identifying regions where more experimental data is
required. The scaling results will be reviewed and refined after each test campaign.
Work Package 3: Experimental Method Development
In this task supporting experimental methods are developed or improved. These methods will be employed in the IWT
testing at RTA planned under WP4 to maximise both the quality and quantity of data gathered. This will aid in the
development of scaling methods and numerical tools as well as the comparison of results between different facilities
and between numerical simulation and experimental data. It will also provide significantly improved capability for future
research and commercial projects and is a key focus for future exploitation.
Work Package 4: Experimental Testing
This WP focusses on preparation, running and reporting of the IWT tests at both the NASA and RTA facilities.
The preparation phases include an investigation of the IWT comparability, writing test plans, including the test matrices
from WP2, and test object procurement.
RTA have developed efficient processes for testing. A good quantity of data can therefore be captured in a relatively
short time, and the scheduled time is envisaged to be sufficient to acquire the necessary data. The test slots in the
Gantt account for preparation, test days plus reporting, as well as some flexibility for schedule changes. The test
process will include the evaluation methods from WP3.
ATX have significant experience in managing IWT test campaigns, particularly at RTA. The experience of the entire
team will be used to ensure a successful test campaign.
The tests in the NASA IRT are managed, conducted and reported by NASA. Key members of the PRECISE
consortium will visit the NASA facility to actively participate in the test and gather data for the experimental
comparisons and scaling method as well as numerical tool development. Workshops will be held to share and discuss
the results after each test campaign.
The schedule of the test campaigns is coordinated so that changes can be made between them. The sequence of the
tests is:
- Medium Propeller @ NASA
- Medium Propeller @ RTA
- Small Propeller @ NASA
- Large Propeller @ RTA
Work Package 5: Dissemination and Exploitation
All project partners are involved in this WP. The dissemination and exploitation measures aim at maximizing the project
outcome in terms of scientific, technical and economic aspects.
ATX will keep track of all dissemination actions, ensure partners are actively participating in these and monitor
efficiency against established indicators.
A key part of the dissemination will involve the certification authorities.
Relevant reports, photos, videos and publishable presentations from the events will be communicated via the partner
webpages.
ATX will develop and maintain a project public webpage as part of their website; the architecture and graphical images
will be defined at project start, in collaboration with the consortium partners. The website will be purely “public”,
accessible to the wider public. All private data will be held on the online site detailed in Task 1.2.
